Happy Fall!

Happy Halloween! We're back to our normal schedule after a successful Harvest Festival this past Saturday. A special thank you again to all the support we received from our Omni Community. It's been a while since we posted a blog so today we thought we'd share some of the other activities happening on our campus as of late.
We have been working in our Cooking Creative Expression and have already had expert parent guests to help us with our ethnic cuisine appreciation focus. First, Diep Tran came out to teach us about Vietnamese cuisine, followed by Nancy Mansour with Arabic dishes. This week we had Claudia Perez with traditional Columbian dishes with a Cuban flair. We have two more cooking CE's before we start preparing for our Holiday Program Prep. The other Creative Expression group has worked on painting with watercolors, acrylic, sufto, and painted ornaments to potentially sell at market. They will start preparing for a display of their work at the Blakeney Campus book fair on the week of November 13th.

In education news, we wrapped up our first humanities term this past week. Native Americans First Peoples created a museum timeline, as the other humanities class and guides walked around for each presentation. Foods, weapons, migrations and oral traditions were all shared. The Indus Valley group created dramatis personas of various jobs people would have at the time and presented it to the community. They discussed the contributions in technology as well as various aspects of home life they would have experienced.
Our new humanities unit about Ancient Greece also started up last week and because of an overwhelming interest in the topic, is now the only humanities for this term. Some things we will talk about our Greek Gods, wars, foods, philosophy and art. Basically, how awesome the civilization for the time and even today!
And lastly, to end the week with community bonding and more time for Harvest Festival prep, we held our first sleepover at the AP campus last Thursday. We cooked a taco feast and breakfast for each other by each other, made lots of the goodies you may have seen or will see at this Thursday's market, as well as treats for the festival, played games and reflected by the fire. Fall flies by, and with all the holidays coming up, we are excited to see what is in store for the next couple months! Stay tuned for updates!

CE|PE Update

9/26/2017

Creative Expression and Physical Expression are going great right now! There are 2 CE and 2 PE selections we are doing right now. The two CE selections are Cooking and Meal Prep. And for the 2 PE selections we have Fishing and Disc Golf. In Cooking, students are cooking well prepared food for community lunches. Which means students don't have to bring a lunch every Monday. We recently prepared  spaghetti and meat balls, and hot panini and chicken soup made from our own processed chickens. In the Meal Prep CE, we have made our own healthy smoothies with help from Kiran Smith,  author of 100 Days of Real Food. We have also learned how to avoid sugar and decipher food labels.

Sales, Seminars and Slice of Life!

We had a great time at the Back to School Picnic last Friday and would like to thank the Omni community for taking time to stop by our market table! Our first items to be sold were our eggs and honey, and unfortunately, we are out of honey until the spring season when we receive our new hive. We also sold some peppers and tomatoes from the garden, yarn from our sheeps-Lily and June, and lip balm which we made from the beeswax of the old hive.
We look forward to another market tomorrow from 3:30-4:30 at the Blakeney Campus. We'd also like to spread the word that the market on September 28th will not be held as usual at the Blakeney location because that evening we invite our whole community out to the Waxhaw Campus for our Slice of Life Event at 6:30. The event will feature information about life as an adolescent as we move through our campus's classrooms, Hacienda, and our farm structures. We hope to see all potential future students there with their families!
In other news, on our campus this week, our Culinary Creative Expression group cooked homemade soup and a variety of paninis for the whole community for lunch, while our Nutrition & Prepared Lunches group had an expert guest, Kiran Smith, who talked about refined sugars, the Dirty Dozen (suggested items to buy organic), and shared smoothie recipes! We also have already experienced vet visits for our injured rooster, (now named Mr. Cogburn) and another chicken from our farm this week, and participated in seminar discussions for Garden, Native American First Peoples, and Math. Our Garden Occupations is looking forward to purchasing a tractor for our farm so we can expand our garden space, and tomorrow will be the day we go shopping as a class!
That's all for now! Hope to see you at our market stand this week!

First of all, we'd like to thank everyone who supported us by stopping by our booth at the  Blakeney Campus Market last week! We'll be back again this Friday at the Welcome Back Picnic from 4:30-6:30 PM and look forward to seeing all our Omni families once again. We'll have fresh produce such as herbs, as well as other freshly grown crops from our garden like tomatoes and peppers. There will be a variety of our other products like jams, honey and dried peppers, but as always, we'll have our eggs available!
This week at school we cooked a Native American feast using traditional recipes of the Native American people we are learning about in Humanities.  Tomorrow, in Garden Occupations we will have a field trip to Dabhar farms to see organic farming in action. Our other Micro-economy Occupation is working hard to bring more products to our community. It's going to be a great year at the AP!

Back To School!

Our students returned to school on August 23rd. The first 3 days of school were spent touring the environment and building relationships with our new students. Another exciting event that happened over the course of the first few days was our 8th graders learned about applying for a managerial position. To apply for their position they had to make a resume and cover letter including why they thought they were right for that specific job. This week they will be interviewed. The managerial positions will be announced on the 1st of September.
Over the course of the summer, our animals stayed healthy and happy. At the barn we have 2 healthy sheep, 29 chickens, and 1 rooster. This past week we released our grown up chicks to roam around in the pasture. When we returned to school we were surprised to find that we now have a full grown rooster! In the Aquaponics Lab, we recently discovered that our tilapia had babies. These babies will be used in our future aquaponics systems. The last new update about the animals is that sadly, our bee hives got a disease. Thanks to Brian Fisher we will be receiving 2 donated hives in the Spring. The first week of school has been exciting and full of surprises!

End of Year!

Today is the last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year! It has been an eventful year and it was great! The students had many great experiences that will benefit them in the future. One highlight this year was the trip to New York to attended the MMUN conference. Each semester was filled with interesting topics, such as units on Prejudice & Global Conflict, Greenhouse, Woodlot, and more! There were also many challenges throughout the year. But in the end, we all had an amazing time and made memories we'll carry on to our next chapters!

Thanks to all the people that made this year the best! Also, thank you to Tanya Polon for dedicating her time to the Land Lab and the students.

I have really enjoyed being the Communications Manager.

Outdoor adventures

We went on a 3 day backpacking trip to Grayson Highlands in Southern Virginia. We hiked a total of 19 miles. We saw ponies. We made many new memories and sunburns. We planned and cooked all of our meals. Our packs were 25 pounds on average. For our water week, we went to the white water center, then we went indoor rock climbing, then we went kayaking on Badin Lake. All of this was super fun, experiential, and a great experience. Yay, ponies!
