Announcement!

Students from the Land Lab are taking the pledge to Spread the Word to End the Word. The Spread the Word to End the World campaign recognizes that the R-word is exclusive, it's offensive and it's derogatory. For the past few weeks some of the students have been gathering in a committee to raise money for the cause. Some of the Adolescents will be joining others to walk in support of intellectual disabilities. This “Friendship Walk” is available to all, so we strongly encourage the Omni community to sign the pledge to stop saying the R-word. Also, participation in the walk is available to all. Registration is necessary in order to participate, the link is down below. The walk is on Saturday, May 6th at Symphony Park at SouthPark. The walk is at 10:00, but registration begins at 7:30. Please donate to the Omni Owls page! And, much gratitude from our team for all those who have already donated from the Omni Community including the-Gardner family, Tran family, Maher family, Vassallo family, Morgan family, and the McCalmont family.

Micro-economies Update

4/18/2017

We are back from spring break! We have a couple announcements from the different micro-economies.

Garden:
The garden is receiving new editions due to the garden management occupation. Currently growing in the garden are herbs, peppers, tomatoes, turnips, lettuce, onions, and garlic. We are also working on creating seedling transplants for your garden!

Market:
In Market, we have approximately 10 dozen eggs, so be ready to buy some farm fresh eggs next market. Also, we have a alot of our popular canned items.

Aquaponics:
In the Aquaponics Lab the systems are successful and have occasional hiccups in the system, but nothing catastrophic. We are growing oak leaf and red leaf lettuce, which will be available for purchase at our next market.

Community/Culinary
    Nothing new to report.

Bees
The bee managers and a couple of students will be spltting the hive with the help of a professional bee keeper. Some will ask, what does that mean? Splitting the hive means taking frames from the working hives and putting them into a new hive. Splitting the hive will produce more honey and will sell fast at one of our markets. Our next honey harvest will be around the end of April or May. Make sure to keep a look out for it!

Omni Adolescents are Spreading the Word to End the Word

Students from the Land Lab are taking the pledge to Spread the Word to End the Word. The Spread the Word to End the World campaign recognizes that the R-word is exclusive, it's offensive and it's derogatory. The campaign asks that people pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. All of the students have taken the pledge at Omni AP. The R-word campaign is put in place by the Special Olympics organization for the month of March. Take your pledge! http://www.r-word.org/r-word-pledge.aspx

The adolescents have added to our chicken flock. We purchased six broiler chickens that will be sold for meat and used for our auction dinner in early June. Our egg layers are dual breed chickens, meaning that they are good egg layers, but after two years of raising chickens the meat is not desirable for anything more than making chicken stock. Our broiler chickens will be processed at a time that is common for meat chickens and they will available for purchase at one of our main campus markets. Stay tune for updates about our broiler chickens and check out our Instagram @lifeatthelandlab

We Are Back!

The 7th and 8th graders have returned from an amazing trip to New York! We were just in New York for a Montessori Model United Nations meeting. Thursday, March 9th, was the first day of the meeting. Each student had the opportunity to give their opening speech briefly summarizing their country’s position regarding the topic. Topics ranged from Nuclear Disarmament and the Space Arms Race, to Desertification and Women’s and Children’s Rights issues, among many others. Delegates can then motion for a formal or informal consultation. An informal consultation is an opportunity to seek out other countries that may have the same goals as you. A formal consultation is when delegates can approach the committee as a whole and review the draft resolution and add clauses from their own resolutions.
At the end of the day the delegates are expected to create a draft resolution, solving the problem that they have been assigned. On the last day of the conference, we traveled over to the United Nations and we gathered like the real General Assembly would. Three delegates from each committee signed up to be a part of the closing bureau, giving a brief summary of the draft resolution and work of the previous days. If the resolution was not adopted by consensus, then the delegates in that specific committee would vote on it again in hopes it would become a passed resolution.

Spain Trip 2017

So, as you all probably know we, the 9th graders, recently went on a trip to Spain. During the trip, we saw many things and had such a great time. And we'd like to share some of it with you. We spent 3.5 days in Madrid and then took a high-speed train to Barcelona, where we stayed in a hostel for 4 days. Everything was so pretty! We walked a lot and saw a lot. In Madrid, we went to El Museo De La Reina Sofia and saw Picasso's Guernica, visited the Museo del Prado, attended a soccer game between Atlético Madrid and Valencia, and visited another Montessori school that will be opening an Adolescent Program in the Fall (They were all so nice! It was so cool there!). Once we arrived in Barcelona, we visited the Sagrada Familia, the Picasso Museum, and the Fundació Joan Miró. We took a tour around Camp Nou, walked around Park Güell, rode bikes to the beach, and shopped at Las Ramblas. We had such a great time! All the food was delicious! Thanks to everyone who made the trip possible and to our wonderful chaperones!

Yesterday was the last day for preparing for the Montessori Model United Nations trip to New York. The MMUN is a simulation of the actual UN in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. For the past three months the students have been preparing to attend a conference regarding the topic they have been studying for. They are each assigned a committee along with a topic they they study. Their delegation along with 2,000 students from other countries will come together to create a draft resolution about their topic. On the last day of the conference the students will travel to the United Nations and gather together like the general assembly would.

Congratulations New Manager Interns!

Congratulation to the new manager interns!

Each 8th grade student has the opportunity to become a manager of one of the micro economies at the Land Lab. Each student went through a interview process in order to obtain the position of their choosing. They first wrote a cover letter, and then wrote a resume. After that was turned in they were interviewed by one of the teachers. Each student will be working with one of the 9th grade managers. This resume writing and interview process will hopefully prepare the students for the real world!
